Home Sweet Planet

People often ask me where I live, where I’m from, even what my address is.

But I can’t answer them.

I grew up thinking home was a place, a location, a set of surroundings. But the “real world” has revealed something very different.

In the last 5 years, I have gone from Connecticut, to DC, to Queensland, to DC, to Connecticut, to Massachusetts, to New Jersey, to Colorado, to Texas… and in just 5 days I will back all of my belongings back into my 2 suitcases, and move to Portland for just 7 weeks. If home were just a place, I probably would’ve gone insane by now.

I’m a community organizer, so instead of having a home I become part of other people’s. I learn the back roads. I relax in local coffee shops. I go to city council meetings. I learn their issues, give their voices a megaphone, and help them work towards solutions.

Their home, becomes my home, and every time I move, I take a little piece of that home with me.

I have my own memories, my own friends and family, my own comforts, of course, but this world is much more than one person’s home. Everywhere has a different story, yet their problems are part of a bigger picture.

So this blog is about home—in more than the typical sense; it’s about home sweet planet.
